Did you know that Black Pearls are only called black because they come from a black lipped oyster shell (Pinctada Margaritifera) Black Pearls come in a vast array of colours and should last for three generations depending on how it is cared for. Never spray perfume onto your pearl as this will eat away the surface.
A nucleus and mantle is inserted into the gonad: female organ of the oyster, and then hung on a line called a Chaplet with about ten other shells. The chaplet is regularly removed from the water and the outside of the shell chipped to remove sea life which attaches itself during the 18 to 24 month growing time of the pearl. This keeps the shell in good health which is very important with regard to the end product. There are many different shapes but as a rule they fit into six categories
